War of the Worlds

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us ? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (James 4:4-10 NIV)

Years ago, I was a counselor at our area’s Victim’s Assistance Center. Every day, it was the same sad story with a repeating habit. The women would come into the center asking for help only to turn right around an go back to the same abuse that brought them to the center in the first place.

We find ourselves in much the same situation in our own lives as we try and leave an abusive relationship with the world; only to go back to it over and over again.

Joy is not ours until we adopt a mindset of rejecting the world and all it represents. God sees our friendship with the world as a declaration of war against him and all he stands for. So often, we try to walk as close to the world as possible without “getting burnt”. The problem is, however, that there are no degrees, fahrenheit nor celsius, in the spiritual world.

Let us as humble ourselves and develop a mind of war against the world. Once we do that, God will reward us with the grace needed to overcome the world that actually hates us and desires our destruction.
